Standing tall in Australia’s explosive dance music scene, Right-O has been building his profile as a self-penned producer for some time. Now, his sights are firmly set on breaking the global music scene. Having totalled a combined 700k streams with two tracks at the end of 2017, Right-O hits the ground running in 2018 with new single, 'First Time'. DJ Mag Japan interviewed the Melbourne producer to find out more about his new single and what he's working on for 2018...

Q1. Could you talk to us about your latest release ‘First Time’ and how it came together?

‘First Time’ is a record that has been in the making for a while, originally we recorded Stacey’s vocal for another record. But after our studio session I loved what she did so much that I just wanted to write something new and fresh for it. I really wanted to make a dance track with a little bit of commercial appeal, as well as staying very true to my underground dance music roots.

Q2. Hows is 2018 going so far - what are your aspirations for the year?

2018 will be psycho. ‘First Time’ is my first release of this year, and we are currently in the middle of organising a run of shows around that. I also have the opportunity to align with some great brands / cultures this year which I am really grateful for. As well as a few more releases, I really want to cement myself this year as an original artist. Someone who doesn’t just follow what’s hot right now.

Q3. Who are currently your biggest influences in your music?

I love absolutely anything the label Defected puts out. I actually got to perform at a Defected show when they came to Australia last year which was fantastic. Other than that I love Claptone, his new album will be incredible. I also am into some rap music, just to clear my ears from the house / tech house every now and then. Guys like Kendrick Lamar, Vince Staples, Childish Gambino, Frank Ocean..

Q4. Could tell us your story about how you became a producer and DJ?

I guess my journey started when I heard dance music for the first time. It was around 2007 and I got given the ‘Ministry of Sound Annual’ compilation for a present. It had records like ‘Call on Me’ by Eric Prydz, Where The Parties At by Tonite Only, and Put Your Hands Up For Detroit by Fedde Le Grand. My interest only grew from there and I got even more into it when I started going out to nightclubs. I was obsessed with the idea of the DJ. These guys had control over the vibe of the room and at any point they could change the vibe, and I loved that. I started promoting at clubs, and learnt very slowly how to DJ. It was around that time that I met my former DJ partner, James. He had come from a production background, and I had come from the performance background and we both wanted to know more about the other so it became the perfect fit. I watched many youtube tutorials, and books about production and started learning the craft. The rest is history.

Q5. Do you have any other projects you’re passionate about as well as making music?

Outside of music, I have recently started a PR, Digital Marketing & Branding firm called Cartel Management Australia, with my business partner and manager Christina Rinaldi. The whole idea stemmed from being an artist who had to go through all of the pit falls trying to navigate such a tough industry. I found that I have been quite hardened from the music industry because I have been rejected on a lot of things. So we thought of the idea to help young artists who not only show talent, but have a ruthless work ethic, to nurture them through the industry. That’s something that I’m really passionate about and that will be my life after music. I look forward to expanding into other industries and breeding out culture of ‘Can’t Teach Passion’.
