Nick Martin, who we are familiar with as he just performed for Ultra Japan 2017 Main Stage, his presence in the scene is growing rapidly as he also toured together with The Chainsmokers a few months back. 2017 has been a great year for him since he signed with Armin van Burren’s label, Armada Music and released “Shackles”. Let’s hear about his story behind the new release and his set during Ultra Japan 2017.
Q1. Please talk to us about your latest release and the inspiration behind it.
My latest release came out on Armada (The Bearded Man) titled ‘I‘m Ready’! The song was written a year ago and was initially produced with a bit of a house vibe. Only a few months back, being inspired by The Chainsmokers, I decided to try and get a more urban vibe on the song. It’s a great record! What I’m also super excited about, is the incredible remix I did for Robin Schulz’s latest single called ‘Believe I Am Fine’! The song was so good, it only took me two days to produce it!
Q2. How was Ultra Japan 2017?
Just insane... I mean you know Ultra is world famous for their enormous stages. But what really stood out to me was the audience. Japanese people are so kind and so organized but they really know how to party hard. And they know all the songs and all the lyrics to the big hits which make the DJs even more excited. There is this genuine feeling of music appreciation. I know it sounds cliché but really music really brings people together at Ultra Japan.
Q3. Can you pick 1 or 2 must plays in your sets and why?
Well, of course I love to play my own songs. At Ultra the other day, I played 27 songs and 7 of them were mine. My goal is to get to the point that I can play at least 65% of my own songs during my sets. So, for the next song I want to add to that percentage is my new remix coming out for Robin Schulz and Pompeii (Audien Remix) by Bastille.
Q4. Which other DJs or producers are inspiring you right now?
The Chainsmokers, Axwell, Ingrosso and Alesso.
Q5. Can you give some advice for the amateur DJs. How did you acquire your DJ skills during your amateur years?
DJing to me is like being a race car driver. The adrenaline when you’re in action is high. Mistakes during sets are not allowed and you need to be super focused. I have been DJ-ing for many years, so I feel comfortable around booths! My advice to all aspiring DJs is to know your music well, practice a lot at home before a gig, even if it is just a house party, and try to visualize the set before you even play it!
Q6. Please leave a message for your fans in Japan.
Japan is in my heart and I will always make sure to visit at least twice a year to play for my Japanese fan base. The love I got in the last two days was insane really. I love you guys. Arigato!
Nick Martin made the crowd go insane with his music and exciting performance during Ultra Japan 2017.
