Kevin Saunderson, a DJ/Producer, a boss of label that has produced many hit records and a festival promoter has released a new track "Good Luck" with his son Dantiez. Now a legendary figure Kevin Saunderson collaborated with his son and we have received some words from the one who has been influencing the Dance Music scene for years. Let's hear what the legend has to say to his new release and his future plans as a DJ/Producer.

Q1. Your new single 'Good Luck' saw its release on March 31st this year. Can you tell us a bit about the record?

The track’s creation started from my son Dantiez, he was working away in our house studio and I walk in to have a listen. Instantly I was like this reminds me of my Inner City stuff, this sounds like me! I loved it so much I wanted to get involved. It was just music at this point with an Inner City sounding riff, so I thought I could develop it further and bring in a singer. Then me and Dantiez finished the production off and did last bits of arrangement. Dantiez’s mother, who’s did some work on The Reese Project amongst others, wrote the lyrics and titled it ‘Good Luck’ after we’d handed her the music. That’s how the record came about!

Q2. How has the year of 2017 been treating you so far?

Every year is a great year, everything is getting better, technology is moving forward, the scene is moving forward. I am getting older but I still love every bit of what I do, it always excites me! 2017 has launched a few different projects outside of Inner City, an E-Dancer live show, The Belleville Three, still doing my normal DJing around the world but moving into more territories. So it’s busy, particularly when squeezing in all the studio time I possibly can.

Q3. What has been the most important moment in your career to date?

I still think the most important point of my career was 1988, I had gone to the UK at the start of the year and the scene hadn’t really taken off yet, house music was bubbling away but it was just the beginning. I’d just returned from a tour with Derrick May and Blake Baxter, most of the gigs were pretty generic in corny clubs, apart from Virgin’s release party for their techno compilation, that was really cool and kinda set the stage for what was to come. Following that I was asked to remix the Wee Pappa Girl Rappers, which slightly changed the way people heard remixes as I swapped all the music for mine, making the original vocals work with my own music. Of course Inner City had been on the Virgin techno compilation with ‘Big Fun’ which was grabbing more and more attention. When I returned to the UK in the summer the scene had escalated dramatically, I stayed the whole month and everyone was on this vibe with huge warehouse parties and the explosion of acid music going on. It was a very clear change and an incredibly special moment for me.

Q4. If you had to pick, which of your own productions is your favorite track to date. What inspired you to produce that track?

One would have to be ‘Good Life’, because Good Life was inspired by ‘Big Fun’. I saw it as the perfect answer to ‘Big Fun’. The tracks come hand in hand but I feel ‘Good Life’ took it to another level, which was a challenge but it happened in the biggest possible way! Another favorite is ‘Till We Meet Again’, it’s a lot slower but just has so much soul, groove and emotion. It’s a beautiful song and it was fun to change things up. It shows my diversity and development in sound. It also had Byron Stingly singing with Paris Grey, they are both from Chicago and the way they sang complimented each other perfectly.

Q5. What tracks have been your must-play records throughout 2016 and why?

I always find a way to play new versions of my stuff, revamps to keep people locked in and updated. Also, I never fail to spin Richie Hawtin’s Plastikman stuff, those songs last a lifetime and work in all moments.

Q6. Where do you think dance music is heading in 2017?

I think it’s moving forward, more people are listening to it than ever before. There are so many more genres and different styles, it takes time for people to discover everything or find own their path. They might start out with EDM or trap, then move to deep house to tech house to techno or however. This means young audiences are more diverse. listening to lots of different sounds. Before they just did house, techno and trance, so in that sense it’s evolving more and more. Also there’s the growth in streaming, which us artists are just getting used to that, working out ways to make it more lucrative. The one downside is that as an artist you have to travel and perform to make a living, you can’t just stay in the studio anymore, making production time much more limited. If you don’t like touring and all the travelling that comes with it, well things can get very difficult. Luckily I still enjoy it very much!

Q7. What would Japanese fans be surprised to learn about you?

They might be surprised to learn me, Derick May and Juan Atkins have known each other since we were about 11 years old; we went to school together. I didn’t like Derrick Originally, I even punched him once, knocking him out! Funnily enough that’s how we ended up becoming friends!

Q8. What is in the pipeline for you in the coming months?

More Inner City records, me and Dantiez have worked on about four to five. There’s a revisited version of my E-Dancer ‘Heavenly’ album coming out, with some more recent tracks on it, plus new versions of the original songs, with some tweaks to the mixes and arrangements from myself. There’s also an E-Dancer live show, starting at Movement with plans for a tour around the world in 2018.

Q9. Is there anything you'd like to say to your fans in Japan?

Thanks for your support in Japan, I haven’t been there in about three years and I cannot wait to come back! I am obsessed with the culture and the way you guys show your love for the music in the utmost way with true respect. It’s very inspiring. I love the food over their too! Peace!
