A Houston born DJ/Producer now based in Miami, Ape Drums made an impact in the scene with his release “Bashment” in 2014. Ever since, his releases are supported by top class artists including Diplo, A-Trak, Dillon Francis and many more. Last year, Sound Museum Vision in Shibuya hosted Diplo’s Mad Decent Party and we’ve all seen him the crowd go wild for his set. Let’s hear about his latest release.

Q1. Please talk to us about your latest release and the inspiration behind it.

I just wanted to bring back simple, raw, hard trap back. When trap in EDM first started, brass was a big sound, and over the last few years it died out. I think it’s important to keep some of the foundation sounds relevant.

Q2. How is this track special compared to other tracks you’ve released throughout your career?

I believe this is my FIRST EDM trap single. As ‘Ape Drums’, I was never known for trap music. All of my other singles have been bass heavy dancehall, moombah, or uptempo stuff. But this being my first trap single, sounding the way it does and getting the support that it’s getting says something.

Q3. Can you pick 1 or 2 must plays in your recent sets and why?

Ape Drums - Like This (Not Out Yet) & ‘Shellz’ simply bc these are the first songs that I’ve produced that get a big reaction, and I feel I will be playing for years to come. Im very proud of that.

Q4. What was your first impression of Japan? What was the most surprising or impressive experience? Something within your expectation?

I love Japan. I feel like you can truly be yourself, dress how you want to dress, everyone minds their business. My favourite part about Japan is the fashion scene, its so next level.

Q5. Any exciting new projects coming up that you can share with us?

I'm thinking of working on an album. I feel it will bring more creativity out of me. I also have a couple of more singles and collaborations coming out. My main goal is to be more active in releasing music this year. Now days that is the most important thing.

Q6. Please leave a message for your fans in Japan.

Japan I hope to see you guys soon and keep that same energy! I love that the most about you guys!

Ape Drums’ dancehall EDM brings something special to the dance floor. He has been producing official remixes for Yellow Claw, Alunageorge, Sean Paul and other artists and giving that magic touch to their originals. Last performance at Sound Museum Vision was a great way to share and spread the brand of Ape Drums in Tokyo and we hope to see him soon again.
